How the "No-Cost EMI" Illusion Works in India
In 2013, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a landmark circular (RBI/2013-14/292) prohibiting banks from offering 0% interest loans or credit card EMIs, declaring them misleading. To bypass this, e-commerce platforms and banks invented the Merchant Discount Model.
1. The Upfront Discount
The seller discounts the product price by the exact interest amount that the bank charges. If an item costs ₹60,000 and the 6-month bank interest is ₹2,600, your card is charged ₹57,400 as loan principal.
2. The 18% GST Trap
Banks treat the ₹2,600 interest as a taxable financial service under Section 9 of the CGST Act. You are billed 18% GST on the interest each month, adding ₹468+ in uncompensated charges.
3. Lost Cash Discount
When you opt for No-Cost EMI, platforms forbid you from claiming the 5%–10% instant discount (often ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 off) available for full upfront card or UPI payments.
