Understanding Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP): Rules, Taxation & Strategies
The Rule of 72 & Doubling Math
Under financial mathematics, the doubling period is approximated by the Rule of 72: \( \text{Years} \approx 72 / \text{Rate} \). At 7.50% annual compounding, \( 72 / 7.5 = 9.6 \text{ years} \), which corresponds exactly to 115 months (9 years and 7 months). The maturity amount is legally fixed at 200% of the principal deposit.
Income Tax Treatment for KVP
KVP does not carry Section 80C tax deduction benefits. The accrued interest is fully taxable under "Income from Other Sources". Investors can choose to pay tax either annually on an accrual basis or cumulatively at final maturity, as per their income tax slab rate.
Pledging KVP for Secured Loans
If you experience cash requirements before maturity, you do not need to surrender your KVP. You can pledge KVP certificates with State Bank of India, PNB, or other commercial banks as security for a loan at low interest margins (typically Repo + 1.5% to 2.5%).
Eligibility & Nominee Protection
Any resident Indian adult can open a KVP account either individually or jointly (up to 3 adults). An adult can also open an account on behalf of a minor. Nominations can be registered at the time of purchase or updated anytime free of cost at India Post.
