Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS): Statutory Rules & Tax Strategy
Sovereign Central Government Guarantee
Unlike bank fixed deposits where protection is capped at ₹5 Lakh under DICGC deposit insurance, SCSS is directly sponsored by the Ministry of Finance. Your entire deposit (up to ₹30 Lakh per individual or ₹60 Lakh for a married couple) carries an unconditional 100% sovereign repayment guarantee.
Section 80C & Section 80TTB Tax Double-Shield
Initial deposits up to ₹1,50,000 qualify for deduction under Section 80C (Old Tax Regime). Furthermore, senior citizens enjoy a dedicated tax exemption of up to ₹50,000 on interest income under Section 80TTB across all bank and post office interest.
3-Year Extension Rules
Upon completing the initial 5-year tenure, depositors can apply to extend the account by an additional 3-year block within 1 year of maturity. The account can subsequently be renewed for further 3-year blocks indefinitely.
Premature Withdrawal Penalties
If closed after 1 year but before 2 years, a deduction of 1.5% is made from the principal deposit. If closed after 2 years, a 1% deduction applies. In the extended 3-year period, closure after 1 year carries zero penalty.
